Daily 5 Launch

This was a very interesting article which explained how a teacher sets up Daily 5 in her classroom.

I particularly liked her I-Charts and how she had an activity station for each rotation. She also runs a 'Writers Workshop' and then her 'Work on Writing' Time. That way I can continue unit work, as well as providing additional time for students to finish current work or write on their own. As always managing time is the key factor.

Goals

Since we are talking about learning goals, I plan on having students set individual reading, writing and spelling goals. I would like to place each students goal on their desks so they have a constant reminder of what they are working on in literacy.

I am thinking they can write their goal and strategies to reach their goal in their books and then they will have brief copy on their desks which will say:

I am working on:
Writing:
Spelling:
Reading:

I will then periodically meet with students to see how their goals are progressing.

Assessment

This is a rubric to assess how well students completed each task of the daily 5. I thought it could be adapted to child friendly language, so students could self-assess themselves.

Daily 5 Assessment Rubric
I am going to adapt this rubric and provide a copy for students. They can then work out their score each week to see if they can improve.

Reflection on Word Sorts/ Word Work

Within the Daily 5 program, student's work on their words in a time called Word Work. In my classroom student's have time to complete their word sorts and another time to complete word work.
I have seen a considerable improvement in student's spelling this year after implementing word sorts. After analysing the data, the student's are grouped and work on words at their level. I have found they have been able to recognise their errors better and have an understanding for the importance of spelling in their writing.

My timetable for word sorts is:
Monday- Cut and Sort
Tuesday- Writing Sort
Wednesday- Blind Sort
Thursday- Locate similar words in guided reading books.
Friday- Dictation

I recently gave students the inventory test and I found that most students have moved into the next bracket. I now have most of students sitting in the other vowel section and they have grasped long vowels. My lower students who were working on blends have also moved up onto short vowels and long vowels!

Review of How I am Going

This year I began my journey of implementing the Daily 5/CAFE literacy approach into my classroom. I have been busy setting up various groups and activities. This blog is now going to be a place where I can paste these ideas for an easy reference point.

I have adapted the Daily 5 program to fit within my classroom. I found that there were certain activities I wanted all students to work on and therefore we would still do these as a whole class, however students would work in their individual groups.

This is the timetable that I adapt for each week.
This allows students to work on their grammar focus, comprehension skills, word sorts, writing and reading groups.
